I know it's no consolation, because I'm sure you're stuck with 5.8.0
because your vendor packaged it that way (I know, I have some 3,564
boxes with a vendor 5.8.0 perl installed on them, it sucks), but if
it's at all possible for you, you really should upgrade your perl
packages to 5.8.1 or higher.  Anything but 5.8.0.

5.8.0 was rife with serious bugs (aren't all point releases?), and for
the life of me I cannot understand why some Linux vendors put 5.8.0
out there in their rpms, and then never released a patch-update to
5.8.1+ for those particular releases of their operating systems.
