Check your VMware version can run the Linux version you want:

http://www.vmware.com/support/guestnotes/doc/

Their support does lag a bit behind the latest releases, which may or may
not be a problem.

I use CentOS mainly because our customers are corporates running Redhat EL
and it gives a free equivalent platform.
