I suspect you need to configure mbuildpl_arg as well; latest CPAN 
understands what Build.PL is so it needs setting up, whereas the advent 
calendar entry was written before this was the case.

No, it isn't. In fact having CPANPLUS installed will often knacker it, 
since CPANPLUS does Strange Things.
