[Catalyst] CDBI vs DBIx

Ok, so I have seen that DBIx is probably the preferred Cat model module,
but what does it give me over CDBI?

I have limited knowledge of databases, in that I can create a MySQL db,
create some tables with foreign keys in, populate and then do simple
selects (joins go straight over my head - i understand in principle what
happens, just not in practice).

I have written a simple CDBI module for a database i have done and can
see how it works and make use of it.  What would swapping to DBIx give
me over CDBI?  I have a new project coming up that will have a DB
backend I need to interface with somehow.
