I've checked the history, and sri added it in version 2475, so you'll
need to ask him if it's intended.

In the meantime, I've documented the default, and also fixed a defined
bug, whereby an input value of 0 (zero) or the empty string would have
been replaced with the default 1.
That's fixed in svn version 3766.
