It doesn't sound very unusual and although I wouldn't want to fight with both Oracle and Red Hat quirks at the same time, 
I think your symptoms more likely imply Catalyst is experiencing an exception when an error page is being generated.  
I can only suggest copious application-level logging to get better detail. CATALYST_DEBUG=1 ?
