Test::MockObject is fairly evil (it uses UNIVERSAL::can and UNIVERSAL::isa which are fundamentally broken).. But this solution is entirely workable.
Personally, latterly, I've just been using Moose directly when I want to mock a class:
Moose::Meta::Class->create(….
