I am not sure whether I understand you correctly.

I hessitate to create options just to fix bugs in other peoples
implementation (although some serious cases those things get in,
like "interpret_nillable_as_optional" to work around some poor
MicroSoft design tool)  There are too many of these situations.

Rare bugs can get worked-around with hooks.  Your situation was
even easier.  I don't think we need an other solution here.  Ok?
