AS Perl 5.8.8 includes lots of improvements regarding CPAN support.
One of them is that it comes already preconfigured (using the brand
new AS CPAN mirror) and the ".cpan" directory now is placed inside the
installation directory.

This comes after gcc out-of-the-box support on AS Perl 5.8.7. They're
clearly improving on this aspect.
