Would be interested in hooking up on IRC sometime to
discuss what you figure out after reading the source. 
I have a bunch of models and forms for some of the
stuff you mentioned, users, blogs, forums, role based
access control and a good start on a wiki like
manager, etc.  I also have some code for uploaded user
images and making them into thumbs.  My goal is to
build a portal-like framework for collaboration sites
(yeah another one :).  I'm east coast USA timezone,
