I am planning to try it, but am afraid to break all my regression
tests... Loads of work. And it may affect the end-user's outcome
as well. Little hessitation.

Maybe a patch to libxml2 is easier ;-)  When it gets a nodename with a
colon, it should be split in a prefix and localname.
